I speak with a lot of writers starting out on Medium who get despondent that they don’t have instant success. I wrote my first article on the 8th of September 2020 (7 months ago). I wrote 15 articles in the first three weeks and only earned $9.04 (about £6)!

I kept going though writing roughly 1 article every 2–3 days. I spent a fair amount of time researching, preparing and then finally writing my articles. I realised along the way that you don’t need to write lengthy involved articles for them to be successful. They just need to be topical, interesting, and mostly original if possible.

This was my 4th and most successful article to date…

Why was this article so successful? You may think it’s yet another AWS services article. It was successful because I explained a complete solution I created and solved a problem that was causing a world of pain for a lot of engineers. If you want some advice don’t just write technical articles on some standalone topic which is widely documented already. Create something unique or describe a complete solution. You will find you get a lot better engagement like this.

This was my 5th article…

This was also a successful article. I didn’t solve some complex problem in this article but I did create a complete solution and document it.

Some other examples of articles like this…
