A Brave New World for Scientific Discovery: Are AI Research Ideas Better?
Can AI Lead Scientific Discovery? Or it is just another uchronia?
If you steal from one author it’s plagiarism; if you steal from many it’s research. — Wilson Mizner
A few weeks ago we talked about the AI scientist. In this article, Sakana AI presented a model capable of proposing original research ideas in artificial intelligence, conducting experiments, and automatically writing the article. In other words, a model would be capable of being an AI researcher: produce novel hypotheses, propose experiments to confirm them, and then discuss the results in an article.
These days the idea is not dead, but rather has been taken up by two articles that we will address in this post. In this study, the authors asked, “Are current LLMs capable of generating novel ideas that are comparable to expert humans?”
