Programming and computer science are vast fields that encompass so very much. There are billions of dollars to be earned in different ways. From selling software to creating the next Facebook, or even building a decentralized application with blockchain technology. The sky is the limit.

But it’s important to build our empires on steel frames of understanding. There’s no better way to do that than to read an introduction to programming. And here you are. Good for you.

I’ve done my best to cut out most of the fluff. Making things as concise as possible. And included some graphics to help your understanding.

My goal here is to have something that we can come back to every few years. To revisit the steel frames we’re using to build our empires. Or, to help along aspiring programmers begin their journey in this fascinating world.

Whatever your reason, thank you. I hope you enjoy this brief introduction. I hope this enables you to build the empire of your dreams.

What is programming?

Programming is the art of telling a computer to do something.

Computers can do very complex tasks. Things humans could never dream of. But in order to do those, we need to find ways to tell the computer precisely what to do and how to do it.

I want you to imagine having a strong friend. He’s absolutely muscular. And you need him to build a bridge so you guys can get to the other side.

You and your strong friend.

But there’s a problem with your friend. He doesn’t speak English. He only knows Japanese. You know he’s physically strong enough to build that bridge. You need to tell him precisely how to build it in Japanese. A language you don’t know. The only way to tell your friend how to build this bridge is with an interpreter.
