A Simple Way to Limit Your Daily Social Media Consumption on iOS

--

Man unplugging a giant plug

This is a simple and easy way to limit your social media consumption (or any app/game you find yourself giving up too much time for) for iOS without having to use focus mode, which is often more than you need. While it’ll still take some self-discipline, using an iOS feature to limit how long you can spend on certain apps will help train you to use them sparingly. You can choose to limit genres of apps like “all social” or choose the specific apps you want to mute after a designated amount of time.

How to set a time limit on daily app usage in iOS:

  1. Go to Settings > Screen Time

2. Go to App Limits

3. Enable App Limits then choose Add Limit
(You can see in the example where you can manage the apps you’ve selected if you want to adjust the time limits on them)

Once you’ve selected the apps you want to limit, you can choose individual time caps.

Once you’ve reached your daily limit… voila! You can override the limit by hitting “ignore” but at least you’ll be aware that you’ve spent at least X amount of time on that app. The limit intercept will at minimum give you pause to consider sticking to your goal of limiting your time on the apps that have been too pervasive in your life.
