So you want to remember you are sick of all these AAA rated games that have realistic graphics but lack any sense of story telling and game machenics.

Well you came to the right place because I found the best EMULATORS that are very easy to download and install.

Here’s the list:

  1. Dosbox X or Dosbox.
  2. RetroArch.
  3. Flashpoint.
  4. PPSSPP.
  5. Yuzu.
  6. PCSX2.
  7. Dolphin Emulator.
  8. mGBA.
  9. Snes9x.
  10. ScummVM.

1. DOSBox X and DOSBox

  • Type: MS-DOS Games
  • Popular Games: Doom, Prince of Persia, SimCity 2000
  • Legality: DOSBox and its enhanced variant, DOSBox X, are completely legal as they are open-source software. However, you should only run games that you own legally or that are available as abandonware.

2. RetroArch

  • Type: Multi-platform Emulator (Supports Various Consoles)
  • Popular Games: Super Mario Bros (NES), The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64), Street Fighter II (Arcade)
  • Legality: RetroArch itself is legal, as it functions as a front-end for multiple emulator cores. The legality of the games depends on whether you own the original ROMs or have legally acquired them.

3. Flashpoint

  • Type: Flash and Web-Based Games
  • Popular Games: Bloons Tower Defense, Club Penguin, Runescape (Classic)
  • Legality: Flashpoint is a digital preservation project, making it legal to use as it archives web games with permission from creators or content that is otherwise inaccessible.

4. PPSSPP

  • Type: PlayStation Portable (PSP)
  • Popular Games: God of War: Chains of Olympus, Persona 3 Portable, GTA: Vice City Stories
  • Legality: PPSSPP is legal as an open-source emulator. Users must dump their own PSP game files legally to comply with copyright laws.

5. Yuzu

  • Type: Nintendo Switch
  • Popular Games: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Super Mario Odyssey
  • Legality: Yuzu is developed by the creators of Citra and is legal to use. Playing games legally requires dumping them from your own Nintendo Switch.

6. PCSX2

  • Type: PlayStation 2
  • Popular Games: Shadow of the Colossus, Gran Turismo 4, Final Fantasy X
  • Legality: PCSX2 is legal, but to use it properly, you should obtain BIOS files from your own PS2 console and use legally owned game discs.

7. Dolphin Emulator

  • Type: GameCube and Wii
  • Popular Games: Super Smash Bros. Melee, Mario Kart Wii, Metroid Prime
  • Legality: Dolphin is a legal emulator; however, you should create backups from your original GameCube or Wii discs.

8. mGBA

  • Type: Game Boy Advance (GBA)
  • Popular Games: Pokémon Emerald, The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap, Metroid Fusion
  • Legality: mGBA is legal to use, and you should obtain ROMs through legal means, such as extracting files from original cartridges.

9. Snes9x

  • Type: Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES)
  • Popular Games: Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Chrono Trigger
  • Legality: Snes9x is a legal emulator, and as with other systems, users should ensure they own physical copies of the games they emulate.

10. ScummVM

  • Type: Classic Point-and-Click Adventure Games
  • Popular Games: Monkey Island series, Day of the Tentacle, King’s Quest series
  • Legality: ScummVM replaces executables of classic games, making it a legal and widely supported preservation tool for legally owned or freeware games.

Conclusion:

Emulation itself is perfectly legal when used correctly. The key is to ensure you’re using emulators with legally obtained game files, whether through backups, purchases, or official sources. By sticking to these guidelines, you can enjoy your favorite retro games guilt-free.
